Module description
As demonstrated by the 2007-2009 global financial crisis, banks are key to the smooth functioning of an economic system, and bank failures can lead to a sharp increase in firm bankruptcies and unemployment. For this reason, the banking industry is highly regulated. This module zooms in on three main factors involved in the management of banks (in particular, commercial banks): banking regulation, the evaluation of bank performance, and bank risk management. The module examines the theoretical and empirical literature on these topics, and bridges theory with practice via the use of databases and case studies. The content of this module is grounded on the research expertise of the module convenor, who also worked in the banking industry prior to entering the academia. There are no pre- or co-requisites but prior knowledge in introductory finance would be an advantage.
Additional information:
Internationalisation – the module will take an international perspectives, and evidence coming from international banking systems will be provided
Employability – the students will be able to develop transferable skills such as data analysis, numeracy, research and analytical skills.
