Module description

This module enables postgraduate students’ participation in approved international summer school programmes at one of the school’s approved international partner institutions. Credits will be assessed by a combination of assessment taken during the summer school programme and assessment set by the Business School. The summer school experience provides a multitude of advantages that can enhance both academic and personal development, including:

• Academic development: access to specialised courses unavailable in the Exeter programme, providing in-depth expertise in specific areas
• Professional networking: opportunities to connect with diverse academic and professionals, fostering collaboration and career development
• Global perspective: cross-cultural immersion that enhances intercultural competence and facilitates intellectual exchanges across cultures
• Credential development: demonstrates initiative and commitment to continuous learning

Student eligibility

Participant selection will be determined as part of an internal application process and selected students must receive approval from the with Module Convenor. Approval. Programme options will be advertised to students during the academic year. Assessment combines partner summer school evaluations with Business School requirements.

Module aims - intentions of the module

This module aims to develop students' capacity to 

  • Critically analyse and evaluate their selected summer school topic (primarily focused on business or language & culture, with potential extensions to other academic disciplines, subject to Module Convenor approval) 
  • Examine and assess their cross-cultural awareness and communication competencies through analytical frameworks 
  • Evaluate global perspectives and theoretical paradigms applicable in their specialised field of inquiry 
  • Engage in structures reflective practice to enhance self-awareness and professional development throughout the module duration 

i)                 Critically reflect on the study of their summer school topic (normally business or language & culture oriented, but may also cover other academic areas, subject to approval of the Module Convenor) 

ii)                Critically evaluate their cross-cultural awareness and communication skills 

iii)               Evaluate the international perspectives of their chosen field of study 

iv)              Reflect on their learning and develop through the module as reflective practitioners. 

The distinctive features of this module offer several unique pedagogical attributes: 

  1. Personalised academic exploration allowing students to select and investigate topics with both intellectual significance and professional relevance to their career pathway. 
  1. Intensive collaborative learning with an international student cohort, encouraging comparative perspectives and diverse educational approaches.

Immersion in alternative academic systems and pedagogical traditions while simultaneously earning academic credits applicable toward their University of Exeter Master's qualification.

Scheduled Learning and Teaching activities (Information sessions / Study Plan at Exeter)10During Terms 1 and 2, the Study Abroad Team will deliver a series of information sessions, including an Academic Guidelines Briefing and a Pre-Departure Briefing, where attendance is mandatory. Students will also be required to complete a study plan for their allocated summer school.
Contact hours abroad40Learning activities and teaching methods will depend on the arrangement of the respective summer school programme: This module is run as a summer school provision by international partner institutions of the business school, and students will be studying this programme at the campus of the partner institution. The number of formal contact hours may vary; and Learning activities may include a variety of different forms (e.g., lectures, seminars, business simulations, company visits)

Re-assessment notes

Alternative assessments from the partner institution are not available. On a case-by-case basis, students may be able to take re-sits for the 80% credit value at the partner institution, where available and if they take place before the usual re-sit period at Exeter.

Indicative learning resources - Basic reading

An indication of learning resources will be provided by the respective convener of the summer school programme. Upon successful application to a particular programme, students, will receive detailed information about the summer school programme and about learning resources prior to their arrival at the partner institution.

Module pre-requisites

To be eligible, students must be enrolled on the MSc Management (12 months or 24 months) or MSc Finance programme. Student eligibility will be determined as part of an internal application process and selected students must receive approval from the Module Convenor.

Before selecting individual modules, students must check individual summer school courses for pre-requisites, which will be approved by the module convenor via the provisional learning agreement and subject to final approval by the host institution.

Eligible students must achieve minimum 60% average in Term 1.
