Module description

The With Industrial Experience Intensive Programme module is designed for students on a four-year WIE programme who plan to undertake a year-long placement but did not complete the non-intensive version, BSD1002.

It will provide opportunity and support to develop the employability and personal development skills needed to explore career opportunities, to source and apply for an industrial placement.

Delivery is through blended learning with a combination of workshops, lectures and e-learning units, all condensed into a 3-week period in term 3.  Completion of all sessions is mandatory unless specified as optional. 

You will meet students who recently completed industrial placements and will receive support from the Careers Team and final year ‘with Industrial Experience’ students.

This can lead to a 3rd year placement in the UK or internationally.

External Engagement:

You will engage with leading graduate employers as part of optional events made available via the Business School and University Careers Teams.

Employability:

You will develop your understanding of employability skills and competencies through the module learning activities, assessments and optional networking events. 

Module aims - intentions of the module

This is a non-credit bearing module that aims to prepare students on ‘with Industrial Experience’ programmes for the tasks and activities related to finding and securing a suitable placement for the third year of their degree.

The combination of support e.g. interactive workshops, 1:1 appointments, and e-learning units focussing on career exploration, self-awareness of personal strengths/skills, and searching, applying and competing for placements.

  • 5. appraise the purpose and benefits of undertaking a 12-month placement;
  • 6. locate appropriate services and resources to help with career planning and placement search;
  • 7. Understand how to effectively apply and compete for work placements.

Syllabus plan

It is envisaged that the syllabus is likely to include some, or all of the following topics, although precise content, order delivery method may vary;

  • Introduction to the ‘With Industrial Experience’ programme and the benefits of placements;
  • Self-Awareness – Understand your skills/strengths and how that could influence the placement you undertake or organisations you apply to
  • Research skills – Developing your research skills for placements
  • Creating your CV;
  • Effective application forms and cover letters;
  • Developing and using a LinkedIn Profile effectively.
  • How to be successful at interview

No re-assessment is offered on this module.

A pre-requisite for progression to BSD2002 is a BSD1005 mark of 50% or higher and achieving a weighted average of 50% or higher across year 1.

If a student fails to meet the BSD1005 grade requirement, they will not be permitted to join BSD2002 and will be transferred back to the three-year degree (where necessary).

If a student fails to meet the year 1 weight average grade requirement, they will not be permitted to join BSD2002 and will be transferred back to the three-year degree (where necessary).
