Module description
This module builds upon the Foundations of Biomechanics core module and introduces methods for analysing angular motion. Through the development of an understanding of angular kinematics and angular kinetics, you will become familiar with approaches for analysing human movement in sports and exercise, both for improving sports performance and for reducing the incidence of injury. You will gain experience of collecting biomechanical data and develop video and data processing and analysis skills to extract and calculate variables relevant to performance and/or injury.
Module aims - intentions of the module
This module aims to develop your understanding of angular kinematics and angular kinetics, and to provide opportunity for you to apply these concepts to the analysis of human movement. Specific areas covered include: angular kinematics; angular kinetics; angular momentum; biomechanical analysis applied to specific sports; introduction to biomechanical aspects of injury.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
ILO: Module-specific skills
On successfully completing the module you will be able to...
- 1. Describe the kinematic and kinetic methods used in the biomechanical analysis of angular motion
- 2. Analyse and interpret biomechanical data obtained either in an applied or laboratory setting
- 3. Demonstrate the basic analytical skills required to calculate and interpret biomechanical data
- 4. Explain and demonstrate the basic analytical skills required to understand published biomechanical material
ILO: Discipline-specific skills
On successfully completing the module you will be able to...
- 5. Apply theoretical concepts to practical problems
- 6. Analyse and evaluate data objectively
ILO: Personal and key skills
On successfully completing the module you will be able to...
- 7. Using spreadsheet packages to analyse and visualise data
- 8. Knowledge of how to export/import different file types
- 9. Synthesising information/short report writing
- 10. Manage time effectively
- 11. Organise material
Syllabus plan
The following content will be delivered using a blended learning approach including bite-sized pre-recorded online lectures and tasks and live engagement activities. ‘Open Lab’ sessions will also be scheduled when possible/ appropriate, to facilitate engagement with specialised equipment or software on site.
- Introduction to module; angular kinematics I
- Angular kinematics II
- Kinematic analysis of performance I
- Kinematic analysis of performance II
- Biomechanical analysis of injury: kinematic aspects
- Sports shoe design
- Current themes in running and footwear
- Angular kinetics I: moments and centre of gravity
- Angular kinetics II: moment of inertia
- Angular kinetics III: angular momentum
- Summary and revision questions

Re-assessment notes
Deferral – if you miss an assessment for certificated reasons judged acceptable by the Mitigation Committee, you will normally be either deferred in the assessment or an extension may be granted. The mark given for a re-assessment taken as a result of deferral will not be capped and will be treated as it would be if it were your first attempt at the assessment.
Referral – if you have failed the module overall (i.e. a final overall module mark of less than 40%) you will be required to sit a further examination. If you are successful on referral, your overall module mark will be capped at 40%.
