Module description
The Study Abroad programme enables you to undertake a year-long study placement at a partner university outside of the UK, as part of your degree programme.
This module serves as the administrative mechanism for recording the Study Abroad assessment results of students within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS). Students participating in the Study Abroad programme and based in a HASS department (except for the Law School, the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, Modern Languages, and the School of Education) will be registered on this module during their Study Abroad placement year.
Module aims - intentions of the module

Syllabus plan
The year abroad takes place in the third of four years of study (Stage 3). Students will study a full academic year’s-worth of suitable approved modules at a partner university, amounting to the equivalent of 120 Exeter credits (60 credits in the ECTS system). Academic content will vary depending on the student’s degree course and the modules available at their host university.
Placements for students opting for this module are secured by the Outbound team in Global Opportunities, following an application process which takes place during Term 1 of the second year. Students will be provided with suitable preparatory materials and guidance by the Outbound team to assist with the application process and with the subsequent completion of paperwork, arrangement of travel and accommodation, etc.
Once students have secured a placement, they will join their host university directly at the start of the third year and will re-join their Exeter degree programmes at the start of the fourth year. Whilst abroad students will follow the syllabuses as provided by the host university, and study modules approved by the HASS Study Abroad Academic Coordinator (or other appropriate academic in respective home department).

Re-assessment notes
For modules taken at the host university, the host university’s rules on reassessment shall apply.
In the event that a student fails the year abroad (i.e. achieves less than 40% overall when the final grade is calculated, including any reassessment), the Study Abroad module mark shall be recorded as a fail, and the student will transfer from the four-year ‘with Study Abroad’ programme to Stage 3 of the respective three-year programme. Progression to the final year of their degree programme will not be affected. The failed Study Abroad module will remain on the student’s record, but will not contribute numerically towards their degree award.
