Module description
This module enables you to work closely with a member of staff from the Centre for Medieval Studies and to pursue an independent study project on an area aligned with their research expertise. This module is particularly suitable for you if you wish to explore certain topics in more depth than is offered within existing taught modules.
Through a series of fortnightly tutorials with your supervisor, you will read and discuss a selection of materials relating to your topic, which will highlight relevant primary sources and allow you to engage with some of the key debates and controversies in the field. Over the course of the term, and with the support and guidance of your supervisor, you will devise and develop a research project in this area. This module provides you with experience of independent study within a structured and supportive framework of contact. It will help you develop key skills which are required for the MA dissertation and PhD research, and which are also transferable to other careers: planning and organisation of a project; research; detailed and critical analysis.
NB. The ability to work with particular members of staff is dependent upon their availability in any given year.
