Module description
Life expectancy has been steadily increasing. This has led to a population that is ageing. An ageing population has unique needs. This module will cover the relevant biopsychosocial factors of ageing and disease in this demographic group of patients. Knowledge and skills will be developed by reference to suitable learning material, learning activities and skills-based training. You will be encouraged to integrate your clinical experience into your learning.
This module is suitable for healthcare practitioners who wish to develop their skills in delivering holistic healthcare to the older adult patient.
Module aims - intentions of the module
By virtue of the physiology of aging and the increasing chance of having multi-system disease, the ageing population may have complex needs. This module is intended to develop your knowledge of degenerative disease, their effects and management options. In addition you will further your skills in thinking broadly, assessing patients holistically and considering the risks and benefits of interventions. You will be expected to consider the ethical and social issues relevant to this age group.

Syllabus plan
Whilst the module’s precise content may vary from year to year, an example of an overall structure is as follows:
- Physiology of ageing,
- Biopsychosocial assessment and management (to include functional ability, cognition, capacity, frailty and risk of falls etc.)
- Acute confusion, dementia, Parkinson’s,
- Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis
- Place-based systems of care including care homes and the multi-disciplinary team
- Multi-morbidity and polypharmacy
To ensure flexibility and resilience over the coming academic year, the following changes may be made to the module if needed:
- Face-to-face scheduled lectures may be replaced by short pre-recorded videos for each topic (15-20 minutes) and/or brief overview lectures delivered via MS Teams/Zoom, with learning consolidated by self-directed learning resources and ELE activities.
- Small-group discussion in tutorials and seminars may be replaced by synchronous group discussion on Teams/ Zoom; or asynchronous online discussion, for example via Yammer or ELE Discussion board.
Workshops involving face-to-face classroom teaching may be replaced by synchronous sessions on Teams/Zoom; or Asynchronous workshop activities supported with discussion forum.
