Module description
This module will permit Humanities undergraduate students to study at one of our approved partner universities abroad. It significantly deepens the choice of third year optional subjects available to you by permitting you to take suitable approved modules in areas of study not available here. It gives you access to modules taught in a different learning culture, and so broadens your overall experience of learning.
Module aims - intentions of the module
The aims of this module are to:
- Gain intercultural competence by immersing yourself in a foreign culture
- Experience life in a different academic system with the opportunity to attend courses to broaden your knowledge and understanding of your discipline
- Study alongside other international students and local students to help prepare for a global professional community
- Develop resilience by overcoming challenges and building key skills of independence, self-motivation and confidence.
- Potentially practise a foreign language if you choose to study at an institution where English is not the medium of instruction.
- Focus on the impact of living and studying abroad reflecting on your experience in a written reflective Learning Log.

- 5. Demonstrate an awareness of the complexities of living and working in a different culture.

Syllabus plan
You will be required to submit applications for your selected universities and to ensure that all necessary paperwork is completed in due time, and to attend preparatory meetings prior to the period abroad. You will be provided with contact details for both the host institution and within the University of Exeter. You will be asked to maintain regular contact (at least termly) with the Study Abroad Team at Exeter, who will also approve your programme of study at the host institution.
You will be provided with appropriate guidance during your final terms prior to the period abroad. Learning and teaching methods for the modules taken at the host university will be determined by that university, and may include a variety of assessment methods, including written and practical examinations.
In addition to assessments determined by the host university, you will be expected to undertake the formative assessments described below and a summative Learning Log assessment.
