Module description

This optional course will focus on accurate use of academic English for postgraduate study in the department of English, with a special focus on the MA programmes in English Literary Studies, Creative Writing, Publishing and Film and Screen Studies. The course is designed to support any students completing postgraduate degrees who speak English as a second or other language.

 

The course will help students with expectations of postgraduate study at Exeter, academic reading and writing, seminar and discussion skills, presentation skills, use of sources, and specific aspects of English usage in academic contexts. The support workshops are designed to be a shared learning environment which allows the space for group discussion, pair work and small group work, and practice activities. Students attending the course should benefit from the content and practice tasks as they will be able to apply the skills to their assignments for their core modules.

Module aims - intentions of the module

The course aims to support students with their knowledge of academic English usage at an advanced level of academic study. It aims to enhance students’ study skills and their understanding of the academic conventions expected on the MA programmes in English Literary Studies, Creative Writing, Publishing and Film and Screen Studies, with a view to making them more confident independent researchers and writers.

Syllabus plan

The course tutor(s) will respond to the specific needs of the students. The course will cover content that may include:

  • Strategies for academic reading
  • Skills for making better use of sources (quoting, paraphrase, summary, synthesis)
  • Academic writing – planning, drafting, argumentation, academic style, referencing, dissertation writing
  • Language and strategies for seminars and presentations
