2. Description of the Programme
This programme has been designed to enable you to achieve both high level academic understanding of contemporary developments in Human Resource Management (HRM) and the development of relevant advanced HRM skills. In short, our aim is to give you the best possible preparation for a long and successful career in HRM.
All our modules map on to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development's (CIPD's) advanced learning outcomes, providing you with the opportunity to complete these as a pre-requisite for full Chartered Membership of the Institute.
The programme is suitable for both full-time and part-time study. Part-time students complete the full PgDip programme over a period of twenty months. Both modes of attendance allow you to combine study with paid work. Full-time students can complete the programme while working part-time. Part-time students can do so while working in a full-time job.
Our programme covers all aspects of HRM, including staffing issues, performance management, employee relations, reward management and human resource development. Further modules focus on leadership, motivation and developments in the contemporary business environment. Our aim is to give you an understanding of a broad range of topics from which you can then choose to focus on in greater depth when developing ideas for written assignments and your research report.
If you enrol as a full-time student you will need to attend taught sessions on two or three afternoons each week over 9 months, in addition to eight further full days scheduled across the academic year. If you come without existing HRM experience you should also complete a ten day work placement in industry.
If you enrol as a part-time student you will need to attend taught sessions on one afternoon a week over 20 months, in addition to eight further full days spread over a two year period. After completing the taught phase of the programme students then need to have regular meetings with the tutor assigned to supervise their research project.
The Exeter PgDip programme involves participation in two short residential courses held towards the start and at the end of your course where we focus on helping you to develop career enhancing professional skills.
3. Educational Aims of the Programme
Our programme aims to:
- provide you with a full and robust understanding of the major conceptual and applied issues in the field of Human Resource Management;
- enable you to develop the professional skills and knowledge needed to meet all the requirements of the CIPD's advanced diploma qualification;
- introduce you to the major contemporary debates in HRM and to develop your capacity critically to evaluate the major contributions that have been made to these debates;
- give you the opportunity to build upon existing bodies of research in the field of HRM by completing a management research report
- greatly enhance your employability and career development opportunities.
You will encounter a variety of teaching and learning styles as you progress through the programme, all of which will be highly participative, combining lectures with a wide variety of group exercises and opportunities for professional skills development. All are supported with extensive additional reading and further learning materials which will be provided using the University's online virtual learning environment. We will help you to develop both an understanding of the major theoretical perspectives and practical HRM skills.
4. Programme Structure
PgDip Human Resource Management is a 9 month full-time, or 20 month part-time programme of study at National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 7 as confirmed against the FHEQ).
The programme will be delivered at the Streatham Campus in Exeter, with students also attending two residential sessions taught off-site for a total of four days.
Our programme is divided into units of study called ‘modules’. The credit rating of a module is proportional to the total workload, 1 credit being equivalent to 10 hours of work. Overall, the PgDip programme consists of 120 credits (2 x 30 credit units, 4 x 15 credit units).
Our taught sessions comprise a mixture of lectures and seminar-type activities. These will be supported by a range of additional activities and guided readings which will be provided on-line using the Exeter Learning Environment.
Assessment will vary from unit to unit. Under CIPD regulations HR Strategy, Context and Performance is assessed by means of a three-hour unseen exam-style test and an HR blog exercise. Our other taught units are assessed by means of an assignment. CIPD regulations require that all units are non-condonable for the purposes of achieving chartered membership.
5. Programme Modules

NB Students must achieve the postgraduate pass mark of 50% within each of these modules to be eligible for the CIPD accreditation at the end of their programme of study.
