2. Description of the Programme

The MRes Advanced Biological Sciences is a unique research-driven programme that will be taken over two academic years enabling you to complete two research projects and undertake an optional industrial placement or internship between your first and second years. We offer seven specialisms: Animal Biology; Bioinformatics; Ecotoxicology; Frontiers in Plant Science; Microbiology and Infectious Disease; Molecular and Cellular Biology; and Sustainable Aquaculture. In your first year, you will receive training in advanced laboratory methods and transferable skills, take three taught modules and complete your first (45 credit) research project. In the second year of the programme, you will undertake your second research project (75 credits) in one of our world-leading research laboratories and write an associated Research Grant Proposal, alongside two optional taught modules.

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

The educational aims of the programme are to:

  • Provide you with the knowledge and understanding of biology at the frontiers of the subject.
  • Provide you with a scientific, intellectual, and practical training that will enhance your employability for a career in research, and prepare you for autonomous lifelong learning.
  • Enable you to experience a supportive learning environment that fosters your academic and personal development.
  • Enable you to think critically, evaluate evidence, analyse, challenge, solve problems, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively.

4. Programme Structure

The MRes Advanced Biological Sciences is a two-year full-time 240 credit programme of study at National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 7 (as confirmed against the FHEQ). The programme is divided into units of study called ‘modules’ which are assigned a number of ‘credits’. The credit rating of a module is proportional to the total workload, with 1 credit being nominally equivalent to 10 hours of work.

The MRes will provide students with the necessary advanced research skills (through the Advanced Laboratory Skills and Professional Skills modules) to equip them for their research projects. Students can elect to have a specialism in their degree title; consult section 7 below.

Our flexible programme enables you to choose either a specific pathway or a selection of modules, which might be at a much later date than date of entry to the MRes Advanced Biological Sciences. All students graduate with an MRes Advanced Biological Sciences, but if you elect to specialise, you will have one of the following pathways named in your degree title:

8. College Support for Students and Students' Learning

Biosciences offers you regular meetings with your personal tutor and your research project supervisors. Your personal tutor will provide you with advice and support for the duration of the programme, supporting your academic and personal development and providing you with pastoral support as required (e.g. relating to accommodation, financial difficulties, wellbeing and sickness). Your project supervisors will provide you with tailored support throughout the duration of your research project. In addition, you can expect reasonable access to all other teaching staff through appointments, whilst the Programme Director in Biosciences will act as your first point of contact for programme-related queries.

Learning resources: The Biosciences website includes the student handbook, and in addition each module will be supported electronically through the Exeter Learning Environment (ELE) where lecture notes, reading lists and assessment details will be provided. You will also be able to follow your record of achievement through the student record tab on the MyExeter student portal.

11. Regulation of Assessment and Academic Standards

Each academic programme in the University is subject to an agreed College assessment and marking strategy, underpinned by institution-wide assessment procedures.

The security of assessment and academic standards is further supported through the appointment of External Examiners for each programme. External Examiners have access to draft papers, course work and examination scripts. They are required to attend the Board of Examiners and to provide an annual report.
