2. Description of the Programme

The MSc Finance and Management provides a good foundation in finance together with an overview of management functions within an organisation. It is an ideal qualification for anyone wanting to start or progress their career in the finance function of an organisation and then move into general management later. It is relevant to working in small business where the ability to control finances is essential, within the finance function of large business organisations, and also in public sector organisations.

The modules in the first term provide you with a foundation in financial management, investment decisions and research skills in finance, as well as an introduction to the main ideas and functions of international business and marketing. In the second term you will study corporate finance, strategy, plus four additional options. In addition, intensive computer training covering Thomson Reuters Datastream and other financial database software systems, is incorporated into relevant modules. You can select a short investment analysis dissertation as one of the options.

The programme offers a choice of the full range of options in both finance and management; it is possible to tailor this programme to match your career goals.

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

  • provide students with an in-depth training in the skills necessary to analyse problems arising primarily in the field of investments and selected areas of management and to reach reasoned solutions to these.
  • bring students up to date with results and issues arising in selected areas of academic research in both finance and management.
  • provide students, through practical sessions, with the additional skills necessary to apply their knowledge to complex situations arising currently in financial markets and to offer research backed solutions to complex management problems.
  • equip students to follow careers such as investment analyst or portfolio managers, or enter research programmes.

10. BEMM068 Managing Competitive Strategy engages students with international case studies to gain an international perspective on strategy.
BEAM050 Advanced Corporate Finance states that the module covers financial theory relevant across the world and current issues in the news.
BEAM031 Financial Instruments explores universally applicable theories, models, and concepts relevant across countries and developments in developed and emerging markets.
BEAM047 Fundamentals of Financial Management states that investment theory and corporate finance are international by nature and the principles taught can be applied in any country.
BEAM032 Investment Analysis 1 uses International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) which apply to more than 100 countries around the world.

7. Programme Regulations


Postgraduate (PG) Programmes: The programme consists of 180 credits. The pass mark for award of credit in an individual PG module is 40%.

Condonement is the process that allows you to pass a ‘stage’ should you fail to achieve the required number of credits in any stage.

PG Programmes: You are required to achieve 180 credits in each stage of the programme. You must have achieved an average mark of at least 50% across the 180 credits of assessment including the marks for any failed and condoned modules. You will not be allowed reassessment in the condoned credit.  Up to 45 credits of failure can be condoned in a stage. For a module to be condoned failure the mark for the module must be between 40-49%.

Personal and Academic tutoring: It is University policy that all Colleges should have in place a system of academic and personal tutors. The role of academic tutors is to support you on individual modules; the role of personal tutors is to provide you with advice and support for the duration of the programme and extends to providing you with details of how to obtain support and guidance on personal difficulties such as accommodation, financial difficulties and sickness. You can also make an appointment to see individual teaching staff.

11. Regulation of Assessment and Academic Standards

Each academic programme in the University is subject to an agreed College assessment and marking strategy, underpinned by institution-wide assessment procedures.

The security of assessment and academic standards is further supported through the appointment of External Examiners for each programme. External Examiners have access to draft papers, course work and examination scripts. They are required to attend the Board of Examiners and to provide an annual report.
