2. Description of the Programme
The MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine is aimed at graduates and professionals from a wide range of backgrounds including exercise and sport science, sport and exercise medical science, physiotherapy, doctors and other health care professionals. It is designed to provide you with an in-depth level of understanding within the context of the programme and a sound basis in research and analytical skills. It is also designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the multi-disciplinary environment of sport and exercise medicine, and how these disciplines are applied in elite and recreational sport settings. The MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine is led by the College of Life and Environmental Sciences (Sport and Health Sciences, SHS), in partnership with the College of Medicine and Health (CMH).
The MSc programme creates a challenge for you academically whilst providing you with the skills to apply theoretical concepts in real-world laboratory, field, and clinical settings. Key skills are well mapped throughout the programme. The MSc is intended to: provide enhanced teaching and learning through research and applied practice derived from sport, health and exercise medicine; provide you with the opportunity to employ theoretical concepts in applied sport, health and exercise medicine settings; and enable you to acquire a range of transferable skills to allow you to develop as an autonomous and reflective individual.
3. Educational Aims of the Programme
This programme is intended to:

provide you with modules allied to the research expertise of the staff across various, diverse disciplines of Sport and Health Sciences and Medicine and Health (including Exercise and Sport Psychology, Biomechanics, Exercise and Sport Physiology, Physiotherapy, Sport and Exercise Medicine);

provide you with a sound basis in research methods and analytical procedures relating to sport, health and medical sciences, and theoretical concepts in applied sport, health and exercise settings, as well as a research dissertation/journal article.
4. Programme Structure
The MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine programme is a one year full-time or two/three year part-time programme of study at National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 7 (as confirmed against the FHEQ). This programme consists of a single stage. Each stage is normally equivalent to an academic year.

You may take optional modules as long as any necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question or an equivalent module.
You may take up to 30 credits of elective modules outside of the programme as long as you have obtained the explicit permission of the Programme Director, the permission of the discipline where the elective module is offered, any prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and you have not already taken the module in question or an equivalent module.
You are also permitted to take the 15-credit module SHSM912 Professional Development Experience. Registration on this module is subject to a competitive application process. If taken, this module will not count towards progression or award calculation.

8. College Support for Students and Students' Learning
Sport and Health Sciences is the ‘home’ discipline for Sport and Exercise Medicine students and each student will be allocated a Personal Tutor in SHS on arrival. Module convenors in SHS and CMH will be available for support with module-specific queries. You can also expect reasonable access to all teaching staff for academic tutorials through appointments. There is a Director of Postgraduate Studies who will monitor student absences and progress, and meet any students needing additional support. In addition there is a Programme Director who will offer support and advice to all students on a programme and a dedicated careers and employability tutor to co-ordinate the interaction between the student, careers service and the discipline.
