The Exeter Model of Initial Teacher Education

The Exeter Model of Initial Teacher Education is a highly regarded model unique to Exeter and cited by Ofsted as an example of best practice. The Model sequences learning to teach through five developmental phases: Anticipating Practice, Beginning Practice, Consolidating Practice, Developing Independence and Extension and Enrichment. As trainees move through the phases, they begin with significant scaffolding to carefully observe teaching in action, and teaching themselves before becoming increasingly independent, teaching across sequences of lessons and taking responsibility for classes by the Developing Independence phase (which begins for the majority of trainees just before Easter).

A series of Training Tools support this process, enabling trainees to observe, teach, evaluate and reflect with real purpose. The Exeter Model, and the training tools within it, are driven by a research base, and we actively continue to research the Model and its impact on teacher learning, to ensure that our work is firmly rooted in evidence. 

The combination of the phased approach and the training tools within the Model enable training to be personalised for every trainee. Trainees can move through the phases at different paces, with the tools enabling bespoke support and target-setting.

As part of our Model, all routes into teaching with the University of Exeter benefit from our commitment to building strong relationships between trainees, as well as with tutors and teachers. Whether in our distance learning communities or face to face, this support is invaluable for trainees entering the profession.
