International Foundation programmes
Preparation for entry to Year 1 of an undergraduate degree:
The modules we outline here provide examples of what you can expect to learn on this degree course based on recent academic teaching. The precise modules available to you in future years may vary depending on staff availability and research interests, new topics of study, timetabling and student demand.
The first year of the programme is devoted to general engineering principles together with geology and surveying and an introduction to mining and minerals engineering. At the end of the first year a three-week surface surveying field course is held on campus.
Topics covered in your second year include project management, geotechnics, electrical engineering and mechanics. In the summer vacation between the second and third years you will work in the extractive industry for at least eight weeks. Most students work overseas during this period and the department can help by providing contact details and suggesting companies which suit your interests, although the onus is on you to find a placement. Companies with close ties to the Department also provide placements for a number of students. Most students receive a wage during their placement and some companies provide other support such as accommodation and travel allowances. Following the work placement and prior to the beginning of Year 3, you will also join a week long industrial tour, normally overseas.
Topics studied in year three include mine design, geotechnical engineering, mining geology and minerals management. You will also carry out a mining feasibility study where you will work in small groups to design and cost a mining project. Throughout the third year you will also work on an individual research project in your area of interest, supervised by a member of academic staff. Previous research projects have included:

A major part of your fourth year will be the completion of an individual research project and a group design project. You’ll also study advanced topics such as mine automation, mine modelling and advanced mine design.

Accredited under license from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.
Accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.
Learning and teaching
Teaching methods include a combination of formal lectures, ‘hands on’ practical classes and field-based teaching. Laboratory classes will develop your understanding of the major groups of rocks, minerals and fossils using our extensive teaching collections and petrographic microscopes. Project work often involves use of our world-class analytical mineralogical facilities. Visits are made to mine sites both on the surface and underground, as well as mills and waste treatment/recycling plants.
On average you will spend 20 hours per week in taught activities at the university and will be expected to carry out a further 20 hours per week in independent study.
During the second and final year of your programme, you will complete a major project, which forms an important component of the final year of the degree programme. This project may involve geological mapping, a research project or a company placement, which is sometimes paid. You'll have a personal tutor who is available for advice and support throughout your studies.
Assessment is undertaken throughout each term via a combination of formal exams and associated coursework. You will have to pass the assessment in the first year in order to progress, but the marks do not contribute to your final degree classification.
Global economic growth and increased demand for natural resources means there has been significant expansion of the minerals industry. Career prospects for mining engineers are extremely good with extensive opportunities, particularly for those looking to work overseas in locations such as Australia, South America and Africa.
Graduate roles in the UK vary from the quarrying industry through to tunnelling companies and the financial sector.
Some graduates opt to continue their training by undertaking taught postgraduate (MSc) courses, for example in geotechnical engineering or computing, or choose to pursue further research with a MPhil or PhD.
