Overview

The BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography and Imaging (L6 Diagnostic Radiographer Degree Apprenticeship) is an employment-based route into the profession of Diagnostic Radiographer. Working in partnership with employers we offer an excellent work based learning package supported by the educational excellence of University of Exeter.

To undertake this apprenticeship you must be employed within a radiography department and your employer must have arrangements in place with the University of Exeter to support your apprenticeship education.

The University of Exeter has offered a BSc (Hons) Medical Imaging (Diagnostic Radiography) since 2004 and is consistently rated as one of the best in the UK.  
 
Successful completion of this apprenticeship programme will ensure you have the skills required to successfully embark on a career as a Diagnostic Radiographer. You will gain the skills and knowledge needed to continually learn, develop and use the evidence base to improve practice.

Employer negotiated module

In the final year, there is an employer negotiated module. This enables you to gain further experience in a particular area of the department or modality, or gain additional skills such as cannulation.

Required subjects

A-levels: BBC, with a B in a science subject. GCE AL science includes: Biology/Human Biology; Chemistry; Computing; Design and Technology; Electronics; Environmental Studies; Geography; Geology; Maths/Pure Maths/Further Maths*; Life and Health Sciences; Physical Education; Physics; Psychology; Science (applied); Statistics

GCSE: Maths and English grade C or 4

Apprentices whose first language is not English need to meet IELTS requirements of at least 7.0 overall and no less than 6.5 in any other section

Non-standard Entry requirements:

The requirements above have been set for entry however we will also have a non-standard entry for applicants already working within healthcare who are up-skilling.

In this situation they will be required to supply a portfolio of evidence and a statement detailing their suitability for the course. The employer will also need to provide a statement of support for submission to the University.

Fees and funding

As an apprentice you will be a full salaried member of your organisation, the banding / salary arrangements will vary between employers. Fees will be funded via the degree apprenticeship levy.

Funding eligibility criteria

As a condition of the government funding support for this programme, to be eligible candidates must be: a citizen of a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) or other countries determined within the EEA, including those with bilateral agreements such as Switzerland, or have the Right of Abode in the UK, and have been ordinarily resident in the EEA or other countries determined within the EEA, including those with bilateral agreements such as Switzerland, for at least the previous three years on the first day of learning.

A non-EEA citizen is eligible for funding if they have permission granted by the UK government to live in the UK, which is not for educational purposes, and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before.

Learning and teaching

BSc Diagnostic Radiography and Imaging is delivered through a combination of work-based practice and on-campus teaching. The on-campus teaching is a mandatory block attendance at the University of Exeter, consisting of 3 blocks of 3 -5 days per year. You will also have protected study time during your working week.

E-learning elements of the course, including lectures, seminars and online collaborative work, are undertaken through the University’s electronic learning environment. This will supplement and further your learning, as well as providing academic support.

Degree apprenticeship roles are developed with a strong emphasis upon the close relationship between employer and university. The academic curriculum will, for a large part, follow real delivery in the workplace with the day-to-day challenges faced in a work environment.

Careers

Radiography provides for a very diverse range of careers. There is consistently a great need for radiographers with strong clinical skills who enjoy working with patients. There are opportunities for advanced and consultant practice, including radiographer reporting and radiographer led-discharge. Radiography is an area of practice that is constantly evolving and is another reason why the career of diagnostic radiography is so rewarding. In addition, career opportunities exist within research, further developing the profession, as well as within leadership and management.

A Medical Imaging degree is a passport to an interesting job and a fulfilling career. There is a grading structure that sees an individual’s salary increase as they move up the profession.

Radiographers trained in the UK are recognised as being among the best in the world and the health providers of many countries recruit in the UK. On graduation you will be eligible to apply for registration as a diagnostic radiographer with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and for membership of the Society and College of Radiographers.

Successful graduates of programmes approved by the HCPC are eligible to apply for registration with the HCPC.
