The University’s charitable status
The University of Exeter has full charitable status in the UK, and linked charitable organisations in several countries around the world.
The University of Exeter has full charitable status as an exempt charity. Exempt charities must comply with charity law but are exempt from the requirement to register as a charity with the Charity Commission. Exempt charities are not regulated by the Charity Commission, rather the University of Exeter is regulated by the Office for Students.
Exempt charities can claim the same tax reliefs as registered charities and can claim Gift Aid on donations from UK tax-payers. The University of Exeter is recognised by HMRC in this way and has HMRC reference number X9538.
In the US, residents can give to Exeter via the University of Exeter US Foundation. The University of Exeter US Foundation has been determined by the United States Internal Revenue Service to be a tax-exempt public charity with 501(c)(3) status.
In Canada, the University of Exeter is recognised by the Canadian Revenue Agency as a prescribed institution under Section 3503 of the Canadian Income Tax Regulations. The University is able to issue gift receipts for Canadian tax purposes.
In Hong Kong, the University of Exeter is registered with the Chapel and York Hong Kong Foundation, a section 88 charity, Hong Kong Charity Number 91/14189. Donors are able to make tax effective gifts to this organisation where the University of Exeter is the ultimate beneficiary.
