HESA Data futures
Current status: Gate 0, Initiation
Strategic vision:
The 2011 BIS White Paper Students at the Heart of the System called for the information landscape to be redesigned in order to reduce the burden on providers and increase the quality, timeliness and accessibility of data and information about higher education.
Benefits:
- The refining of the language and definitions around data through a new data model to replace the current one that underpins the HESA return
- Provision of more timely data by accelerating the first data returned on students from the end of their first year to the first quarter after registration (effectively a year earlier) and making multiple returns during a year to provide more frequent updates
- A 'collect once, use many times' approach - meaning a reduction in other returns
- Improved the quality of data across the sector, but at the same time to improve 'data capability' - the ability of the sector to handle, quality control, analyse and use data
