Community Day - Saturday 15 June 2024
Community Day
Everyone is welcome to this family-friendly, fun day where there will be lots to explore including sports activities, creative crafts, music and entertainment. After you’ve worked up a bit of an appetite, we’ll have some delicious street food on offer which you can enjoy whilst watching our world-class scientists showcase their wacky experiments. If you have any energy left after that, then why not let the kids have a jump on the bouncy castle or take part in a pizza making workshop in the Forum Kitchen.
Make sure you save the date in your diary and keep an eye on this website, where we will be updating with all the exciting events we have planned.
We can’t wait to see you.
The Fungal Threat Lab - Come and find out what our MRC Centre for Medical Mycology is doing to combat the global threat of ‘killer fungi’.
Do you know that fungal infections kill almost three million people, across the world, annually? This number increases every year and the medicines we use to treat these infections are beginning to become less effective. Come and meet our researchers and find out how they are using science in The Fungal Threat Lab to discover new ways of diagnosing and treating Killer Fungi.
You will be able to see real examples of fungal infections at work and take part in interactive activities to help you understand why we need to be taking this fungal threat very seriously.
Quantum navigation - Try out a virtual reality experience where you can glimpse the world through the eyes of an animal!
Some animals have intricate sensory systems that allow them to perceive their environment beyond the familiar senses of touch, taste, smell, sound, and sight. For example, birds will use the Earth's magnetic field to navigate their way across the globe. We are starting to understand that they may use quantum mechanics to gain this functional understanding of the world!
Dr Luke Smith and the Kattnig group, based at the University of Exeter's Department of Physics and Astronomy and Living Systems Institute, have developed a virtual reality experience that emulates how this compass works, allowing us to glimpse the world through other eyes. Join them to view the world in a completely different way, from our macroscale, down to the nanoscale.
We’ll be adding more stalls in soon, so please keep checking back!
Exeter Chiefs players – Come and meet two Exeter Chiefs players, Alfie Bell and Louie Gulley, they’d love you to say hi.
Flower stilt walkers – On the day we will be joined by a giant walking daisy and sunflower, who will be there to greet you as you look around the stalls and will be happy to take pictures, so make sure you keep those eyes peeled for them, no doubt you’ll find them wherever the sun is!
Bouncy Castle – Come along to burn off some steam and let the kids have a bounce of our bouncy castle.
Pizza making workshops – These workshops will run throughout the day in our Forum Kitchen in the Forum. You can book your slot here.
Emergency Services – We’re excited to announce that we will be joined in June by our local firefighters and police officers.
We’ll have a host of sporting events to take part in at our Sports Park – keep checking to find out what we have planned.
There’ll be lots of food available to purchase on campus. Details will be here soon.
