Exeter Climate Systems
Exeter Climate Systems (XCS) is a research centre created in 2007 that provides a community focus for staff within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics who are working on weather and climate related applications. Mathematics and statistics play a crucial role in weather and climate science by providing essential tools for addressing key problems (e.g. the formulation and implementation of numerical models required for prediction, optimal methods for using data, etc.). In turn, weather and climate science pose fascinating and pressing problems that have helped to stimulate the development of new mathematics and statistics.
XCS staff come together for regular seminars and informal social events such as weekly "Climate & Cake" (Fridays at 3:15pm) and "Climate and Friends" drinks in town (Thursday evenings). We also have close working links with larger crosscutting initiatives across the University as the Global Systems Institute and the Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
XCS provides bespoke advanced training in mathematics and statistics to weather and climate scientists at other institutions such as the Met Office, the University of Bergen, and the University of Pavia.

In 2007, I created Exeter Climate Systems to provide a communal hub for innovative interdisciplinary research in mathematics and climate at the University of Exeter. The centre has since grown rapidly and is now world-renowned for its cross-cutting research developing and applying mathematics/statistics to solve real world problems raised by partners such as the nearby Met Office, the World Bank, and global insurance companies. Our expertise has also contributed to climate change reports such as the IPCC reports, where several staff have served as lead authors, authors, and editors."
