John Goldring went to Wyggeston Grammar School and then on to the University of Exeter to read Law. Having obtained his degree he was called to the Bar in 1969. As a junior he practised mainly on the Midland and Oxford Circuit. He took silk in 1987. He was counsel in several high profile cases including the prosecution of Beverley Allitt (the nurse who murdered several babies), the regulatory case regarding the audits of the Maxwell companies and the Public Inquiry into child abuse in North Wales. 

Lord Justice Goldring became a Recorder in 1987, sat as a Deputy High Court judge from 1996 and as a Judge of the Courts of Appeal of Jersey and Guernsey from 1998. He became a High Court Judge in the Queen’s Bench Division in 1999. Between 2001 and 2004 he was a Presiding Judge of the Midland Circuit. Between 2005 and 2008 he was a Judicial Commissioner of the Judicial Appointments Commission (the body which recommends appointments as judges). In 2008 he was appointed a Judge of the Court of Appeal and Deputy Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales.

Between 2010 and 2013 Lord Justice Goldring was Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales. Shortly after he ceased being Senior Presiding Judge he was appointed to sit as a Coroner for the Hillsborough Inquests. He retired as a Lord Justice of Appeal in November 2014 (but continues to sit as a Coroner).
