About the trainer

I grew up on a dairy farm in North Devon before completing a degree in Philosophy at the University of Nottingham. More recently, I have recently completed an MSc in Psychology and am a graduate member of the British Psychological Society. I have spent the majority of my career in the Higher Education sector after completing a Graduate Management programme at the University of Exeter. I have worked in a number of different roles covering IT, HR, Project Management and Finance. While working in the University’s Finance team I trained as an accountant and am now a Fellow of the Association of Charted Certified Accountant (ACCA). I currently work for the University as a Business Intelligence Officer and Data Visualisation Specialist. I also teach Data Visualisation on the MSc Business Analytics and MBA programmes at the University of Exeter's Business School.

Inspired by the idea of bringing effective data visualisation practices to everyday roles and challenges, I have been running data visualisation workshops at the University since 2013. Over the years I have read and digested key texts and resources in data visualisation and related fields. My initial inspiration came from the writings of Stephen Few and Edward Tufte, but I have also assimilated ideas from practitioners such as Alberto Cairo, Andy Kirk, Nathan Yau and Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic. I have a keen interest in psychology and in how the ideas of influential thinkers such as Daniel Kahneman, Steven Pinker, Chip Heath and Dan Heath can help us know how to better communicate with data.

My training style has been described as natural, engaging and approachable and I like to think I have a unique combination of the knowledge, skills and experience needed to offer practical training and guidance on how best to communicate with data using everyday tools for everyday challenges.
