Research IT works in partnership with researchers to provide the digital infrastructure, platforms and expertise needed to deliver world-leading research. We support advanced computing, research data, secure environments, cloud and emerging technologies, helping researchers work more effectively, collaborate more easily and turn ideas into impact.
The future
We are developing Exeter’s next-generation Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) to make digital research easier to access, simpler to use and more sustainable to operate. This will provide a more joined-up experience for researchers, with clearer routes to support, stronger platforms and expert guidance across the research lifecycle.

Compute Services |
These shared IT platforms provide the processing power needed to run applications, analyse data, and support teaching, research, and operational work without individuals needing to manage their own servers. |
Data Services |
Research Data Services support researchers to store, manage, and share their research data securely and sustainably across its lifecycle. At the University, this includes providing centrally managed research data storage and guidance to help meet funder, legal, and information security requirements. |
Funding |
Research IT funding support helps researchers understand, plan for, and correctly cost the digital infrastructure and technical expertise needed to deliver their research. This includes guidance on costing compute, storage, specialist software, and Research IT staff time into grant applications, so projects are realistic, compliant with funder rules, and sustainable to deliver. |
Integration Capabilities |
Research IT integration capabilities focus on connecting research‑specific tools, platforms, and data with the University’s wider digital and IT environment. This includes integrating research systems with core services such as identity, storage, compute, finance, and reporting platforms, so that research activity can operate reliably within a joined‑up digital ecosystem rather than in isolation. |
Partnerships |
Research IT partnerships focus on working closely with researchers, professional services, and external organisations to co‑design and deliver effective digital research solutions. This includes collaboration across University teams (such as Research Services, Library, and central IT) as well as with external partners like funders, national research infrastructure providers, and technology suppliers. |
Research Enablement Services |
Research IT enablement services help researchers build the skills, practices, and approaches needed to make effective use of digital research infrastructure. This includes guidance, training, and hands‑on support for research software development, specialist tools, and sustainable ways of working with data and compute, helping projects be well-designed from the start. |
