Abstract
Abstract: This research project focuses on the role of teaching-focused economics academics in UK universities at a time when the teaching-focused career path is becoming more common, and when the higher education sector is facing greater challenges. In 2023 an initial online survey and set of semi-structured interviews were conducted with academic economists in Canada, the UK and US. A follow up UK online pulse survey was distributed in 2025. Results highlight a rewarding career path, but a lack of clarity around SoTL expectations and university promotions criteria. The 2025 results also indicate awareness of financial challenges in the sector.
