Global and Area Studies
A new initiative designed to rethink and recreate the ways in which we approach pedagogy, research, and public engagement in a diverse and global world of cultures, peoples, and regions.
An integral part of this endeavour is to rethink area studies as connected across geographical, disciplinary, temporal and thematic domains. Projects in humanities, arts and social sciences will often have critical connections to the sciences and other applied modes of inquiry.
The initiative comprises currently four area studies centres: Exeter Centre for South Asia, Exeter Centre for Research on Africa, Exeter Centre for East European and Eurasian Studies and Exeter Centre for Latin American Studies.
We expect that will grow over time to bring in both traditional established regions and areas as well as those creatively rethink the region on a maritime or other geographical basis. In comparison to other initiatives around the country and in Europe, Global and Area Studies (GLAS) has a distinct identity that is public facing, student facing, and research and innovation facing in a transformative manner. It considers the global as well as the areas and engages on four critical principles:
- A sustainable and critical transdisciplinary approach within the area by developing links into the other faculties, ESE and HLS;
- Co-creation and curation of knowledge and pedagogy with critical partners internationally;
- A related commitment to intellectual decolonisation and the pluralisation of epistemologies that are practice oriented and that also involve serious engagement in language and cultural training;
- Beyond the teaching and research, a commitment to being public facing and engaged at global, regional, and local levels.
Our research will be organised thematically through ‘labs’ and our teaching through both related existing MA programmes and new ones being developed.

Events
This academic year as part of the research and outreach element of the Global and Area Studies initiative, we are curating a series of exciting conversations with leading specialists working in areas of intercultural and global philosophy. These conversations are an integral part of the work of our new research lab, The Common Ground, and are held in association with the Intercultural Philosophy Association (interculturalphilosophy.ac), whose administrative home lies here at Exeter as well.
Each conversation will commence with an opening presentation from our guest, discussed by the moderator Sajjad Rizvi, and followed with some questions and comments from the registered audience on zoom. The conversations will then be made available on our website and on YouTube.
