Thermo Fisher Talos L 120C Transmission Electron Microscope

The Thermo Fisher Talos L120C is a versatile 120 kV transmission electron microscope supporting a broad range of conventional and cryogenic electron microscopy applications. Designed as a multifunctional platform, the system enables routine ultrastructural imaging of resin-embedded and negatively stained specimens while also providing advanced capabilities for cryo-electron microscopy and electron tomography. This flexibility allows researchers to investigate biological samples across multiple scales, from cellular architecture and organelle organisation to macromolecular complexes preserved in near-native states.

The microscope is equipped for both conventional TEM workflows and cryogenic specimen screening, making it an ideal platform for sample optimisation, quality assessment and data collection prior to high-resolution structural studies. Automated acquisition is supported through Thermo Fisher EPU for single-particle cryo-EM workflows and Tomography software for tilt-series acquisition and three-dimensional reconstruction. Unlike our JEOL JEM-1400 transmission electron microscope, the Talos L120C supports electron tomography, enabling researchers to generate detailed three-dimensional datasets of cellular ultrastructure and complex biological assemblies.

Image acquisition is provided through both a Thermo Fisher Ceta-F CMOS camera, optimised for cryogenic imaging applications, and a Gatan OneView camera, delivering high-quality imaging for a wide variety of conventional TEM workflows. Together, these detector systems provide the flexibility required for routine screening, structural biology, tomography and advanced research applications.

Supported by our dedicated cryo-EM and electron microscopy specialists, the Talos L120C provides researchers with access to modern transmission electron microscopy workflows spanning conventional TEM, cryo-EM, tomography and quantitative ultrastructural analysis, making it a central component of Exeter's expanding electron microscopy and structural biology capability.
