National Teaching Fellowship Scheme

Kelly was awarded her National Teaching Fellowship in 2022 in recognition of her sector leading work in Researcher Development. Kelly was the first member of Professional Services staff at the University of Exeter to be awarded a NTF, and is now both the Head of Academic Development and Teaching Excellence Awards Lead (TEAL) for the University, supporting our future NTF and CATE winners.

Nicky is Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Education (ESE) and Professor of Natural Sciences Education. Her NTF award recognised the work she has done over many years leading innovation in interdisciplinary education in particular Natural Sciences education at Exeter and as Chair of the Society for Natural Science. It also recognises work in student support, educational leadership and technology enhanced learning.

Dawn is the Student Employability and Development Manager in the University of Exeter Career Zone, and has led research and provision that has influenced the career decision making of thousands of students. Her NTF award recognises her work on the Widening Participation and Careers Education for Sustainability agendas. In 2023, Dawn and colleagues also received a CATE award for the internationally renowned Grand Challenges programme.

Dr Andrew Pye is Associate Professor in Biological Sciences at the University of Exeter. He was recognised in his NTF award for his person-centred approach to education, with a strong emphasis on fairness and inclusivity. This included personal tutoring and peer support for undergraduate students, as well as his support for staff on AdvanceHE accredited training programmes.

Through her work as Professor of Clinical and Applied Psychology and Director of CEDAR / Clinical Training (PGT), Catherine has become a recognised local and national educator and leader within clinical training to develop the psychological workforce. Her NTF award recognised her impact on clinical training initiatives at Exeter and with Health Education England and professional bodies overseeing national governance.

G.J. is Professor of Clinical and Social Epidemiology and was recognised for his contributions to public health teaching at Exeter, including development of the Master of Public Health programme; as well as for contributions to public health capacity-building nationally through strategic roles, and internationally through direct work with universities in the Global South.

Karen is the Professor of Medical Education. She was awarded her NTF for her work on early career health professionals: how they apply their undergraduate learning to team working within complex health systems, and health professions education and wellbeing, and the organisational contexts that support these.

As Professor of Evidence Based Psychological Practice in Exeter's Clinical Education Development and Research (CEDAR), Paul specialises in clinical education and training in evidence-based psychological interventions. His NTF award recognised his role in expanding the university's clinical training portfolio to offer programmes from degree to doctoral level interspersed with periods of clinical practice. 

Dr Greta Bosch joined academia full time in 2002, teaching civil law and common law, as well as researching in human rights. She has always held a keen interest in internationalisation, promoting a diversified and varied teaching experience. She has received a number of merit awards for excellent teaching practice since 2010, and her NTF award recognised her work and impact as an education leader in Law.

After completing his PhD in paediatric exercise science, Professor Richard Winsley became a clinical exercise physiologist in the NHS, before joining the University of Exeter to pursue teaching and research in Sport and Health Sciences. His NTF award recognised his work ensuring the delivery of undergraduate and post-graduate degree programmes that are innovative, stimulating and contemporary. 

Will Katene began teaching in the mid 1980s and has extensive experience in teaching physical education (PE) to secondary school pupils and lecturing in PE, Sport Sciences and education to students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. His NTF award recognised his desire for improvement in teaching, and his impact on developing excellence within and beyond his own teaching responsibilities and the university. 

Alex Haslam is Professor of Psychology at the University of Exeter and Laureate Fellow at the Universities of Queensland. He has written 16 books and over 350 peer-reviewed articles exploring the contribution of group processes to social and organizational functioning with a particular emphasis on leadership and health. Alex has received a range of major awards from scientific bodies around the world including recognition for distinguished contributions to psychological science from both the British and Australian Psychological Societies. In 2022 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia service to the field of psychology.

Paul has a longstanding interest in statistical literacy, though his current focus is more specifically on the transfer of learning. This perspective is shaped by recently completing eight years in industry, including work in product analytics and supporting decarbonisation initiatives in the transport sector. Paul's NTF award in 2012 recognised his work teaching across a number of institutions, with the aim of challenging popular perceptions of statistics by believing that not only is the subject important, but that learning it can be fun and interesting. His focus on learners has led him to adopt a 'statistical literacy approach' which, he believes, can help some learners overcome maths phobias that might otherwise limit their learning and subsequent careers. 

Now retired from Exeter, Adam Feldman's work at the university brought unique, highly diverse, multidisciplinary skills from a 20-year career in orthopaedic surgery to a second career in engineering academia and education at Exeter’s Department of Renewable Energy. As undergraduate programme-lead, his subject was voted twice consecutively for ‘Best Subject of Study’ at the University.

Now the Chair in Digital Education at the University of Manchester, Sarah's NTF award whilst at Exeter recognised her work championing inquiry-led teaching, collaborative learning, and writing for authentic audiences.

As Senior Lecturer and microbial ecologist, Dr Sara Burton has worked at universities and in industry, with her roles within the Microbiology Society allowing her to support and develop microbiology education internationally. Although no longer formally working for Exeter, Sara still supports the university with supervision and specific teaching and research activities.
