Graduate School of Environment and Sustainability

Data science

The concurrent crises of health, climate and environment require interdisciplinary solutions underpinned by sophisticated, contemporary understanding and modelling in a data-intensive world.

Data science is important because it combines technology and analytical methodology to generate meaning from data. Today so much data is available on so many topics, organisations can easily become overwhelmed. The UK has one of the world’s strongest and most developed data analytics sectors, predicted to grow by 177% over the next 5 years and demand for qualified professionals continues to grow.

Our programmes will provide you with an understanding of and confidence in using real-world data and mathematical models to address the big societal issues of the 21st Century. You’ll learn subjects across Data Science and Analytics including network analysis, text analysis and machine vision, as well as social contexts, governance and ethical considerations.

Our teaching will help you develop innovative approaches to how we use data to solve problems in modern society, whilst considering the social and technical implications of data science and AI. Choose one of our specialisms to focus your learning on a particular area of interest.
