Tuition fee status

Students at the University of Exeter are classified as either Home or International for tuition fee purposes. Your fee status determines the tuition fees you pay for your course.

Fee status is determined individually based on UK Government regulations, primarily your immigration status and UK residence history. Assessments are made in line with guidance from UKCISA (the UK Council for International Student Affairs).

How we assess your fee status

Your fee status is initially determined using the information provided in your application. If we need more information, we will contact you by email to complete a fee status questionnaire and provide supporting evidence.

To qualify for Home fees, you will generally need to meet criteria such as having settled immigration status in the UK (for example, British or Irish citizenship, Indefinite Leave to Remain, or EUSS Settled Status) and having been ordinarily resident in the UK and Islands for at least three years before the start of your course. Some categories, such as refugees and those with humanitarian protection, have different requirements.

The University is unable to determine fee status before an application has been received. Prospective applicants should review the UKCISA guidance on fee categories or contact the UKCISA advice line for individual advice.

EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals

Since 1 August 2021, most EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals require settled immigration status (such as EUSS Settled Status or Indefinite Leave to Remain) and three years’ UK residence to qualify for Home fees. Irish nationals

Under the Common Travel Area arrangement, Irish nationals living in the UK or Republic of Ireland are eligible for Home fee status, subject to meeting the relevant residence requirements.

Channel Islands and Isle of Man students

Students from the Crown Dependencies (Channel Islands and Isle of Man) are eligible for Home fee status on the basis of three years’ residency in the UK or Islands. Query your fee status

Before you accept an offer, check that the fee status assigned to you is correct. If you believe your fee status is incorrect, you have 28 days from the date of your offer to query it.

To request a review, email ad-feestatus@exeter.ac.uk with your full name, Exeter reference number (or UCAS personal ID), programme title, and details of why you believe the classification is incorrect.

Appeal a fee status decision

If you have queried your fee status within the 28-day window and disagree with the outcome, you may submit a formal appeal in writing to ad-feestatus@exeter.ac.uk. Appeals should only be submitted if you have new relevant evidence, or if you believe the assessment was not conducted in accordance with official regulations.

Appeals are reviewed by a panel of at least two staff members, including the Admissions Fees, Funding and Finance Officer (or delegate) and an additional team member not involved in the original assessment. The panel’s decision will be communicated in writing.

Change of circumstances

Before your course starts: If your circumstances change after applying but before starting your course (for example, you are granted British Citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain), contact us at ad-feestatus@exeter.ac.uk with evidence of your updated status before 1 September in the year your programme starts. We will conduct a reassessment.

After your course has started: Fee status changes after enrolment are possible but very unusual. If you believe you have become eligible for Home fees for the next year of your course, contact ad-feestatus@exeter.ac.uk with full details.
