"I’ve been UK Chief Executive of Orange, and been at the heart of many developments in Media and Telecoms over the past thirty years."
Dr John Allwood (Economics & Statistics, 1973; Hon LLD, 2005)
Non-Exec Director, Talk Talk & Carphone Warehouse, Trustee, The Pepper Foundation
ANG Role: Council Member
Having trained as a chartered accountant, I spent eleven years at News International Group, and after a couple of years at Microtel, the forerunner of Orange, joined the Mirror Group in 1992 as Finance Director, becoming Chief Executive in 1999 and overseeing its merger with Trinity plc in 2000.
Later that year I was appointed UK Chief Executive of Orange, the company I first joined in 1991, spending four years running one of the UK’s largest mobile networks.
Between 2005 and 2007 I was Managing Director of Telegraph Media Group before joining Mecom plc, a pan European Newspaper company. Since leaving Mecom in 2009 I have been pursuing a portfolio career and I am currently a Non-Executive Director of Talk Talk plc and Carphone Warehouse plc. I chair a small regional newspaper group in Scotland and am a charity trustee as well as being a member of University Council.
I’ve been a member of the University of Exeter’s Council and Alumni Network Group since 2006.
"Exeter gave me a great start and to see Exeter go from strength to strength as a member of the Alumni Network Group is very rewarding, in helping to ensure many more students will be given the opportunities I had."
