I am a community ecologist investigating the impact of artificial lighting on plants and invertebrates. My goal is to investigate how artificial lighting can alter structure and composition and to understand these processes. I am especially interested in how human activities alter the structure and functioning of ecosystems.

I am also a member of the Biosciences department in the College of Life and Environmental Sciences.

Research interests

  • Impact of artificial light pollution on terrestrial communities
  • Impact of fisheries on the functional composition of benthic communities (ie, those found at the very bottom of seas or lakes)
  • Consequences of extinction for key ecosystem processes
  • Importance of dominant vs. rare species
  • Role of compensation in ameliorating the impact of biodiversity loss
