Cellular Biophysics

The Cellular Biophysics theme focuses on the study of cells at the molecular, supra-molecular and phenotypic levels, linking physical observations with biological function.

This theme includes studies of cellular migration and colony structure, e.g. relevant to antimicrobial resistance, research into the biomechanical properties of cells (e.g. nucleus, cell membranes…) in health and disease. The molecular contents of cells are probed with novel types of vibrational spectroscopies and single-molecule sensing, e.g. to uncover chromatin structure and characterise real-time protein secretion. Beyond single cells, we also grow multicellular spheroids to establish disease models ,e.g. for neurodegeneration, using microfluidic technologies.
