Governing strategies

  • HR Strategy
  • Training & Development Strategy policies, procedures, codes of practice etc on employment, equal opportunities and data protection
  • Statutory provisions on employment, equality and immigration, Certificates of Sponsorship etc.

Level of service

Human Resources will:

  • Encourage effective induction for newly appointed staff
  • Support the University's appraisal (PDR) scheme
  • Disseminate information on training and development opportunities (internal and external)
  • Organise and deliver a programme of events to meet the training and development needs of staff throughout the University in line with University strategies
  • Support Colleges and Professional Services implement the Institutional Training Plan, ie Leadership and Management, CPD, Customer Service Delivery and Use of Information Technology.
  • Work with individuals, groups and Colleges to find solutions to their specific training/development needs
  • Provide financial support for training and development at events to meet the strategic needs of the University

Key indicators

Key indicators for this activity are:

  • Deliver on projects identified in Institutional Training and Development Plan;
  • Keep web site advertising of all internal provision and events up-to-date;
  • Review and evaluate all internal provision with internal training providers, once a term.

Performance targets

Subject to the Dependencies below:

  • All new staff will be assigned an induction facilitator who will be responsible for undertaking a ‘local induction’ and all staff will be invited to the central ‘welcome lunch’.
  • All staff, before undertaking a training activity, will have the opportunity to discuss with their manager their learning and development goals
  • After a training activity, all staff will have the opportunity to discuss with their manager the quality of training received, what they have learnt and how they intend to apply the learning in their role;
  • 95% of internal courses delivered receive 4 or 5 rating for learning and relevance.

Redress

Complaints about aspects of the service should be made to the TDU Administrator in the first instance. In the event that the customer/client remains dissatisfied following informal discussion with the TDU Administrator, the issue should be raised in writing with the Head of Training & Development who will normally respond within 5 working days.

Dependencies (Colleges)

To operate effectively in this service area, Human Resources requires:

  • Colleges to identify an Induction Facilitator to work with Training and Development.
  • Colleges to identify a Training co-ordinator to work with Training and Development to collate training needs and, together with line managers, evaluate training outcomes.
  • Colleges publish ‘local training procedures’ that describes how discipline/function specific training will be addressed, supported and evaluated.
  • Colleges take part in annual review and consultation of Institutional Training and Development Plan.
