About Special Collections

Heritage Collections is part of the University of Exeter Library with responsibility for Special Collections and the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum.

The Special Collections and Bill Douglas Cinema Museum teams manage the University's unique and distinct collections of archives, rare books, film memorabilia and objects which can be accessed via our reading room, housed in the Old Library.

The collections are used extensively in University teaching and research programmes.  We also have strong links with other regional, national and international institutions, engaging in outreach and collaborative projects which benefit both the University and the wider community.

Here's what some of our students say about using our collections:

I really enjoyed working in the archive... it was great to get out of the classroom and do something really interactive. The materials were so interesting, especially the first editions of Virginia Woolf books and the film fan magazines. I will now be eager to use an artefact in every essay I write...

I have always been fascinated by archival sources, and I find the prospect of having 'hands on' access to a 'real' academic archive thrilling.
