We are delighted to welcome The Camborne School of Mines Trust into the University of Exeter’s College of Benefactors.

The Trust was originally established in 1893 with the objectives to encourage and to promote education and research in Mining and Mineral education; the Camborne School of Mines has been integrated into the University of Exeter since 1993.

The Camborne School of Mines is one of the World’s most famous mining schools founded in 1888. The School now has a unique combination of scientific and engineering expertise in geology, mining and minerals processing and applies this to world-leading research and teaching. 

Based at the University’s Penryn Campus, the School has an established international reputation for research and teaching, with a commitment to responsible mining and sustainable development. It is ranked second for Materials and Mineral Engineering in ‘The Guardian University Guide 2015’ and current figures show that 94 per cent of Mining Engineering studentsare in graduate level employment or further study within six months of graduating.

The Camborne School of Mines Trust has donated more than £2.5 million to the University of Exeter since 1993 in the form of grants for the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff, travel, field trips, prizes and student association support. In 2014, the Trust made a donation of £500,000 to the University through a specific donation from a former student to support the Holman Test Mine, located south of Camborne, not far from the University’s Penryn campus. The Trust’s donation will be a contribution to the redevelopment of facilities to support research and teaching for students to learn how to drill, charge and fire explosive rounds as well as learning how to survey the mine using both traditional and cutting-edge methods, such as using laser 3D scanning equipment.
