Clare Marx CBE DL PRCS (DSc)

Clare Marx is President of the Royal College of Surgeons and has worked as an orthopaedic surgeon at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust for over 20 years. She studied medicine at University College London Medical School qualifying in 1977 and pursued a surgical career with a series of training posts in the London area. In 1987 she completed an arthroplasty fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and in 1990 was appointed a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at St. Mary’s Hospital and St. Charles Hospital London, with a particular interest in early surgical education.

In 1993 she moved to Ipswich Hospital and became clinical director of the combined A&E, Trauma and Orthopaedics and Rheumatology directorate. Clare has been extensively involved in many of the Hospital’s groups for governance and new projects and in 2013 became Associate Medical Director at the Trust with a special remit for revalidation and appraisal, and continues in that role having stopped active orthopaedic practice in March 2014.

Throughout her career she has been involved in medical education, co-authoring a Trauma and Orthopaedic Curriculum, education committees and eventually chairing the Specialty Advisory Committee for Trauma and Orthopaedics. She was elected to the British Orthopaedic Association Council and became President in 2008-9.

In 2007 she received a CBE for services to medicine and in 2008 she was made a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Suffolk. She was elected to the Royal College of Surgeons Council in 2009 and re-energised the Patient Safety agenda before also taking on the Chair of the Invited Review Mechanism in 2011. Clare was elected President of RCS in 2014.
