Cornish Story

Cornish Story

  • An educational organisation that works in association with the Institute of Cornish Studies to investigate the cultural heritage of Cornwall and its global diaspora
  • Combines written articles, oral history, music, photography, poetry and film on an online dissemination platform
  • Supports interdisciplinary research in the field of Cornish Studies at the community level through a programme based on democratic scholarship

Cornish Story was originally established by the Institute of Cornish Studies in 2010 as a Research Knowledge Transfer initiative to create an independent educational unit working in association with the Institute and Cornish communities. Central to its outreach and publications strategy is an online platform that brings together written articles, oral history, music, photography, poetry and film to build on the pioneering work of the Cornish Audio Visual Archive (CAVA). Cornish Story’s creation was inspired by Global Oneness in the USA that emphasises the ‘Power of Stories’ to ‘bring the world’s cultures alive’ in an educational setting. A similar objective is pursued by Cornish Story since it advocates an innovative approach in relation to the heritage of place by combining research dissemination with public engagement.

Cornish Story emphasises the importance of democratic scholarship in bringing academia together with communities. From the beginning Cornish Story has been keen on promoting a greater knowledge of Cornish heritage to students and younger generations through research, writing and promotional opportunities. It also provides a training service in oral history and other research techniques so that cultural awareness of Cornwall’s past and present can be discussed and documented at the communal level.
