Social Inequality Challenge 2023

During Grand Challenges Week, students worked on a group project to address an aspect of their Challenge. As part of their project, students created outputs including podcasts, social media campaigns, websites and apps and so much more. The projects that the students produced in the Social Inequality Challenge 2023 are shown below.

Bridge

Using University students as tutors to provide a voluntary tuition service for economically disadvantaged GCSE and A Level students.
ConnectEd

Media campaign to increase accessibility to information and resources on higher education.
HandUp

Addressing the problem of the homeless being disconnected from society due to social stigma and how people can make a difference in Exeter.
DRIP

Project looking at diversity and representation in period dramas with focus on class, gender, disability, LGBTQ+ and race.
Put Her On The Map

A campaign to raise awareness against gender inequality within the sectors of media and film across the globe.

 

Overexeposed

Podcast exploring the portrayal of female celebrities vs female authority figures in the media.

 

Unmasking Inequality

Two podcast episodes that tackle representation in the media, and gender inequality in the media.

 

365 Days of Safety

A campaign proposing central hub working alongside the guild and students to centralise resources relating to women's safety in Exeter.
Exeter Students' Guide

Informative and accessible booklet and campaign regarding safety in Exeter to help new students feel confident and safe at uni.

 

Unight

A safety kit as well as a booklet with safety advice concerning drink safety and walking alone at night for all new Uni students.

 

Aidwatch

Raising awareness of the impacts of recovery aid after extreme environmental events between developed and developing countries.
Left Behind

Pressure group to tackle the economic inequality of female refugees and exploring the lack of voice for the women in the UN.

 

The School Spectrum

A global research portfolio on education, pushing for a greater social and economic mobility for state school students.
Breaking Barriers

Investigating the equality and inclusion within the university, with the aim of suggesting improvements to the university.
Equality Act Section 14 Letter

Petition for parliament to enact 5.14 Equality Act 2010.
