Research

With its strong multi and interdisciplinary focus rooted in management, psychology, economics and data science, the Centre’s research generates scientific insights which inform the latest leadership theories and practice.

The Centre collaborates with other academic institutions and organisations from the public, private and third sectors. Examples include University of Queensland, Harvard University, Cranfield School of Management, Bath University, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the NHS, the UK Military and Emergency Services , the House of Commons, Financial Reporting Council, Solicitors Regulatory Authority, Bank of England, Ministry of Justice, Institute of Directors, AACSB, EFMD, RAF Tedder Leadership Academy, Libraries Unlimited, Local Government Association and the British Council.

The research emphasis is on responsible leadership – the potential of organisations and individuals to profitably solve the problems of people and planet, enhancing the world for all. Within this overarching theme, the Centre’s research looks at the following areas:

  • The relationship between leaders and followers
  • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Well-being
  • The future of work

Rising Star Award

Each year the Exeter Centre for Leadership (ExCL) hosts a Rising Star Award in partnership with the Network of Leadership Scholars (NLS). The award recognizes a junior academic who is making a significant contribution to the field of leadership. The intention of the Rising Star Award is to help promote the work of highly promising junior scholars. A committee of judges chooses the successful candidate each year and the prize is awarded at the Annual Academy of Management (AOM) conference.  The successful applicant will also be awarded £1500 to go towards supporting their research and will be invited to join the committee to judge applicants the following year. In 2021, Jackson Lu from Sloan School of Management, MIT was the winning candidate.
