Equality Matters

I would like to welcome you to the University of Exeter's Equality Matters webpages.

“The University of Exeter believes that the diversity of its community is an essential part of its values and enriches employment, research, studying and learning experiences.”

We are committed to supporting students and staff to work and study in an environment that is free from discrimination and promotes equality of opportunity.

Equality and Diversity is one of the areas of the University’s business which is governed through a mechanism known as dual assurance. Supporting the dual assurance partnership for Equality and Diversity are the Equality and Diversity Advisory Group and a number of equality sub-groups representing each of the protected characteristics.

Through the University's Equality and Diversity Action Plan and Equality Objectives we are working towards a culture that welcomes equality of opportunity and values diversity. Some changes are swift to happen, others may take time to evolve. I have long experience of and commitment to equal opportunities, and I can assure you that they are one of my priorities as the Vice Chancellor.

Issues can be brought to the attention of the Equality and Diversity Advisory Group through Equality and Diversity Co-ordinators based within each College/Service.

We all have an individual responsibility and I urge you all to help us put our Equality and Diversity Action Plan into full effect.

Professor Sir Steve Smith
Vice-Chancellor
