Mental Health and Suicide Safety: Supporting Students (Level 2)

About this course:

This course follows on from the level 1 online training for mental health and suicide safety, expanding on the See, Say and Signpost approaches when supporting student in distress.

During the L2 session the following will be covered, we will:.

Explore mental health and the impact mental health difficulties can have on a student.

Identify signs you may see if a student is experiencing mental health difficulties and is in distress.

Explore foundation communication skills when talking to students in distress and what to ask if you're concerned about a student's safety.

Identify signposting options available to you and the student.

Consider support options for staff supporting students.

This course involves presentation and teaching from the facilitators as well as participatory activities such group discussion, case studies, quizzes.

Staff MUST have completed the L1 training prior to attending L2.

If you feel you are exempt from the L1 training due to prior knowledge or alternative training please discuss this with the Wellbeing Team prior to booking on the course.

Learning outcomes:

During this session you will gain:.

- knowledge about Mental health and Ill-health.

- increased confidence in recognising students in poor mental health, distress and crisis.

- increased confidence in responding appropriately to students in poor mental health, distress and crisis.

- an understanding of helpful communication techniques.

- an understanding of 'next steps' and signposting routes.

Who should attend this course:

Staff who have a front facing role in supporting students.

Staff MUST have completed the L1 training prior to attending L2 If you feel you are exempt from the L1 training due to prior knowledge or alternative training please discuss this with the Wellbeing Team prior to booking on the course.

Presenter(s):

The session will be run by 2 staff from the Wellbeing Services staff training team.

This may include Jo Blakely, Kathy O'Connor, Emma Early or Rachel Bragg.
