Travelling by rail

An amended timetable is being introduced to keep customers moving safely while speed restrictions are in place following prolonged extreme hot, dry weather that has affected track across the route:

• Passengers are still able to travel between London Waterloo and Exeter St David's, but are advised to allow extra time to complete their journeys

Please note that trains travelling from Plymouth to Exeter are still currently running using the same timetable. Continue to check National Rail to plan your route. 

Exeter’s two mainline railway stations are within walking distance of Streatham campus: 

• Exeter St David's (15 minutes) 

• Exeter Central (20 minutes) 

• Exeter St James is also within a 15-minute walk of both campuses.   

The walking route is signposted from St David's and the campus map shows the walking route.  

Railway stations within walking distance of St Luke’s are: 

• Exeter Central station (20 minutes)   

• St James (15 minutes)

The information below is intended for colleagues who will be travelling by rail to Exeter from another location by rail: 

• Free bus travel between Exeter campuses and from St David’s Railway station - Colleagues who travel between the Exeter campuses and St David's Railway Station are able to use the number 4 Stagecoach service for free (from 7am - 7pm) on showing their staff card as they get on board.  

• Interest free loans for staff travelling by rail - for employees who travel to and from the campuses by train regularly, the University can provide an interest-free loan for the purchase of an annual rail season ticket, subject to certain conditions. To view the conditions and apply, please complete the Application for Annual Season Ticket Loan form.  

•  Railcards which may be applicable:  

• • 16-25 Railcard is available for people aged between 16 and 25.  You can also apply if you’re a mature student in full-time education (subject to eligibility).  Save a 1/3 off most train fares throughout Great Britain. 

• • 26-30 Railcard is available for people aged between 26 and 30.  Save a 1/3 off most train fares throughout Great Britain. 

• • Devon and Cornwall Railcard - save 1/3 on off-peak rail fares in Devon and Cornwall (after 8:45am). 

• • For all other railcards including ‘Two Together’ and ‘Disabled Persons Railcard’ please view the railcard website directly. 

• PlusBus - Buy an Exeter PlusBus ticket together with your train ticket and a Railcard. You can use Exeter city buses for no more than £4.30 per day.  

The information below is intended for students who are away from Exeter or at home and will be travelling to Exeter, by rail from another location: 

Railcards which may be applicable:

• Devon and Cornwall Railcard - save 1/3 on off-peak rail fares in Devon and Cornwall (after 8:45am). 

• Network Railcard(London and South East) - save 1/3 on rail fares for journeys in the Railcard Area

Travel between Exeter campuses and from St David’s Railway station - Students who travel between the Exeter campuses and St David's Railway Station are able to use the number 4 Stagecoach service at a cost of £2.50. Alternatively, you can benefit from PlusBus and buy an Exeter PlusBus ticket together with your train ticket and a Railcard. You can use Exeter city buses for no more than £4.30per day.
