Look How Far We’ve Come!

Date: 15 September 2023

Since implementing Warp-it, the resource reuse management system, in 2018 we’ve hit a huge milestone by saving over £250,000!

You may remember we told you back when we launched about our ambitious goals!

The target was a commitment to make the most of our resources, by reducing unnecessary procurement, reducing waste, save purchasing and waste disposal costs, support building clearances, reduce supply chain waste, improve collaboration between staff and realise lower carbon emissions.

Nigel Morris, Sustainability Manager (Circular Economy) who leads on Warp-it, said, “We’ve smashed our original targets. We’re absolutely thrilled, and staff can give themselves a well-earned pat on the back and a few high fives for their great participation! Warp-it is designed to make it extremely easy for University of Exeter staff on all campuses to loan or give surplus items to other staff. Furthermore, items that aren’t needed within our institution can now be passed onto partner organisations. This is all about saving all staff time and money and enabling us all to be smarter with our resources.’’

Our Results (launch to the end of the 2022/23 academic year)

  • £291,520 saved
  • 33,178 kg of waste diverted to reuse
  • 89,354 kg CO2 saved
  • £1,600 donated to charitable partners
  • 1,104 members

Jess Davies, Infrastructure Assistant for ESE faculty Infrastructure Team said, ‘’I have redistributed almost everything I have put on Warp-it and it's so satisfying to see perfectly good furniture reused. I feel awful whenever I've had to throw things away, so this is a such a helpful idea!’’

Jo Chamberlain, Director of Sustainability said, ‘’This is such a great achievement and makes a significant contribution towards our sustainability commitments. The use of Warp-it results in financial savings through reduced purchase and waste disposal costs. It’s a win win. I look forward to further development of the initiative and encourage all members of staff to get involved.’’

So, if you have an item that is taking up space that you don’t need, put it on Warp-it. Or if you’re looking something check Warp It before you buy new! Any resource can be reused, as long as it’s legal and not electrical.
