What's on? - Penryn

The Penryn campus plays host to a range of virtual, in-person and hybrid employability and employer events. From workshops and alumni panels to careers fairs and employer drop-ins, there is something for all students in terms of skills development and access to employment opportunities. The list below shows a small selection of upcoming events:

Event Accessibility

We endeavour to make all our events as accessible as possible. We've listed some of the actions we've taken below. If there's more we could do, then please email your thoughts and recommendations to es-penryn@exeter.ac.uk

For extra-curricular events we only use rooms that have good physical accessibility and have the most up to date assistive technology set-up and ready to go. For Pint 'n' Pasty and live panel / presentation and Q and A events we almost always use Exchange Lecture Theatre. It's gently sloping with wide aisles and on the level with the Upper Stannary - so, easy to move to the bar for the networking element of the event. We use AccessAble guides to help us to choose the event spaces. The Exchange Lecture guide is here.

Timetabling sometimes means that our events and employability sessions take place in spaces that are not as accessible as we would like. We advocate for accessible spaces on campus and make timetabling changes where possible.

Some larger spaces can feel overwhelming, echoey and intimidating or overly stimulating when full of people. All of our careers and jobs fairs have a quiet half an hour set-aside at the start, during which we encourage only those who need that quieter time to attend. The lighting is adjusted where possible during these times.

We’ve also introduced a ‘quiet zone’ to the larger events – this provides a calmer space in which to take time-out from the event if needed.

All of our virtual and in-person lecture theatre-based events are recorded and captioned. The links to the recordings are available either through your academic department or on request from es-penryn@exeter.ac.uk

For timetabled sessions, recordings are available through the relevant ELE2 module page.

Some extra-curricular workshops are interactive with personal experiences shared, and it is therefore not appropriate to record these sessions.

Where available, for transportation to events on the Streatham Campus we book coaches that have wheelchair access. Where more than one wheelchair user registers for the event, we will ensure that suitable tranpsort is available - this is usually by booking an adapted taxi. We strongly recommend informing us of your needs during the event registration process.

The fonts and colours we use alongside the contrast, transitions and images on our promotional material are chosen to be as user-friendly and as accessible as possible. We use guides to support the process.

For employer-led and and alumni panel events, we ask all students to complete a brief needs-based survey when registering. For these events, how well we meet needs (including those linked to accessibility) is covered in all of our post-event feedback surveys.

Our work to make our events as accessibile as possible will always be a process under development.

We are currently looking at how we can support students and speakers to use the hearing loops in the event spaces - we will produce a user guide once we have fully investigated their booking and use.

We want to do more to hear the student voice around accessibility and the events we run, so are looking to work with the SU and the Student Experience Officers to structure how we can do that.

We're sure there is more we could do so please help us by contacting the events team at es-penryn@exeter.ac.uk.
