External Examining

External Examiners are one of the principle means by which we uphold our academic standards. The University regularly reviews its policies and processes for external examining and ensures alignment with the QAA's Quality Code for Higher Education.

The full policy and procedures for the external examining of taught programmes at the University of Exeter can be found in the External Examiner Handbook. This provides information for all external examiners of undergraduate and postgraduate taught and includes guidance on the role and responsibilities of external examiners.

Department Contacts are responsible for nominating External Examiners.

If you wish to submit a nomination for a new External Examiner or to replace an External Examiner reaching the end of their tenure, please email Education Policy, Quality and Standards externalexamining-qs@exeter.ac.uk

Education Policy, Quality & Standards (EPQS) oversees the University’s processes for managing External Examiner annual reports. The team receives and logs all submissions, coordinates their review, and works with Faculties and academic departments to ensure that any themes, commendations, or areas for enhancement identified by External Examiners are appropriately considered and acted upon.

EPQS also supports the University in analysing trends across reports to inform ongoing quality assurance and enhancement activities.
