Steve Perryman MBE (LLD)

Steve Perryman joined Tottenham Hotspur as an apprentice in 1967 and made his league debut in 1969 at the age of 17. Steve represented England achieving four schoolboy caps and four England youth caps. He also received 17 caps for England Under 23’s (a record). Steve was made captain of Spurs at the age of 20 and holds the Spurs record for most appearances in the league, FA Cup, League Cup and Europe. Steve’s versatility saw him play in midfield, central defence, sweeper and finally at right back.

In a long, successful career at Spurs Steve won two League Cups, two UEFA Cups and two FA Cups. In 1982 Steve won his first full England cap and in the same year was awarded ‘Footballer of Year’ by the Football Writers Association. In 1984 Steve was awarded an MBE for his services to football. After Spurs, Steve played for Oxford United, before joining Brentford as a player/assistant manager.

Steve went into football management and managed at Brentford and Watford before returning to Tottenham Hotspur as assistant manager in 1994. After a brief spell in Norway, Steve managed Shimizu S-Pulse in Japan where they won the League Championship and the Asian Cup Winners Cup. Steve won Manager of the Year 1999 at the J League Awards. Steve then managed Kashiwa Reysol in Japan before returning to England.

Steve became director of football at Exeter City F.C. where they enjoyed a return to the football league, winning promotion from the conference in 2008.
