Karen Markes, Occupational Health Manager

Karen is the University Occupational Health Manager. She has worked in Occupational Health for 25 years in a diversity of Occupational Health settings including the NHS, light industry, R&D and 9 years at the University of Oxford prior to coming to the University of Exeter in 2012. Karen has a BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature, a BSC in Occupational Health and an MSc in Occupational Health Psychology. She qualified as a Registered General Nurse in Exeter and her family live in our lovely West Country in Devon, Cornwall and Dorset.

Karen, known as Kaz to colleagues, started her Occupational Health career in 2003 and has worked in a variety of OH settings, including heavy industry, local authority and higher education. Prior to her OH career, as a dual-registered nurse in general and mental health nursing, she spent many years working in a range of hospital services, including A&E, medical/surgical and acute psychiatry, both in the UK and abroad. Karen is particularly interested in the relationship between work and mental health. Her OHA role includes the delivery of training on mental health in the workplace, personal resilience and other wellbeing topics. In her personal life, Karen enjoys long walks in the country with her husband and dogs, and visiting her native London to watch West Ham United and spend time with family and friends.

Rebecca has been working at the University of Exeter as an Occupational Health Advisor since October 2020.  She qualified as a Registered Adult Nurse in 2003 from UWE Bristol.  She has been working in Occupational Health since 2004. Whilst working, Rebecca completed MSc in Occupational Health at the Institute of Occupational Health at the University of Birmingham in 2009, her dissertation was on the Respiratory health of Farmers, something she feels very passionate about being an area notoriously difficult to access healthcare, but one of the ones who really need support.  She has worked in a variety of industries being employed both directly and for large OH Providers and has experience in public sector roles, aviation, heavy manufacturing, engineering, warehouse & logistics distribution, emergency services, SMEs, automotive, finance, legal & NHS.  

Outside of work Rebecca enjoys spending time with her 3 children and lives an outdoors life on a small holding in Somerset.  She is hoping to get some horses very soon, but has to persuade her husband, obviously the children are very keen too, so hopefully won’t be too much longer!

Liz is dual qualified as a general and mental health nurse and qualified as an Occupational Health Adviser in 1991. Liz then pursued her interest in psychology, graduating with MA (Hons) in Psychology from University of Aberdeen in 1997. Liz has had a varied career since then and has worked in a range of settings including local authority, emergency services, manufacturing, engineering, retail, water and waste industries. Outside of work, Liz enjoys spending time with her children, walking her dogs, and participating in wild water swimming.

Joanna is the staff Disability Lead (OH/EDI) providing information and support for any member of staff with a disability or condition that has an impact on them at work. Joanna has a MA in Occupational Psychology and has spent her professional life working in the field of disability and employment both in Canada and in the UK. Joanna feels passionately about disability and equality. She specialises in providing practical advice and guidance to support people with disabilities at work. Joanna has lived experience of disability and has been a carer for several years.

Erika has been working in the HR department at the University since 2015 and has been working in OH since 2019. Since then she completed training to become a Health Surveillance Practitioner. She has also undertaken training in Mental Health First Aid as well as Mental Health training run by the University. Erika has a BA (Hons) in English, loves to read and get out in her garden with her husband and son.

Toni has been working at the University of Exeter as an Occupational Health Advisor since 2015, and has been working in Occupational Health for the last fourteen years. She qualified as a registered general nurse in 1994 and qualified as a paramedic in 1998. Toni moved to New Zealand with her partner in 2004 and began her experience in Occupational Health in 2006, initially working at Christchurch Hospital on the South Island. While working, Toni completed a post-graduate diploma in public health in 2007, specialising in biostatistics and epidemiology. Toni moved back to the UK in 2014 and completed her post-graduate diploma as Specialist Public Health Nurse specialising in Occupational Health in 2017. Toni is a keen outdoor enthusiast, she enjoys lots of outdoor activities including running, sea kayaking and cycling.
