Cornish National Minority Status – Major Study 2024

The Cornish National Minority Status 2014–2024 Evaluation assessed the decade-long impact of official UK recognition on Cornish identity and culture. Conducted by the University of Exeter with over 2,200 respondents, the study found strong attachment to Cornish identity, with most participants perceiving recognition as beneficial and linking it closely to cultural and linguistic pride. However, while awareness of cultural activities—particularly those involving the Cornish language—is widespread, active participation remains comparatively limited. Respondents overwhelmingly support greater investment in Cornish culture, preferring long-term government backing while also advocating for grassroots and community-driven initiatives. The report recommends deeper, more representative research to guide future cultural and devolution strategies and enhance Cornish distinctiveness through broader social inclusion, education, and visibility efforts.
