Professorial Pay

The University of Exeter recognises and rewards the excellence of our Professors in a variety of ways. Details about professorial pay can be found below.

The University conducts a biennial Professorial Salary Review. The next review will commence in the Spring term (2027) with salary increases taking effect from 1 August 2027.

  • The University has 3 pay bands for Professors: Band 1, Band 2 and Band 3.
  • There are pay points within Band 1 and Band 2; there are no stipulated points above point 71 within Band 3.
  • Professors receive national (JNCHES) general increases, in line with current practice.
  • The University normally conducts a biennial Professorial Salary Review.
  • Progression within each Band will not be assumed; rather, it will require evidence of sustained high levels of performance, demonstrated in the biennial reviews.
  • In appropriate circumstances, market supplements and other forms of supplements and allowances may be paid.

To determine professorial pay in a transparent and equitable manner, the University references a three-band pay structure. This structure is designed to recognise and reward continuing scholarly achievements, the exercise of academic leadership, and contributions to the life, work and sustainability of the University community.

Biennial Review 2027

The next Professorial Salary review will commence in Spring 2027.

The next biennial Professorial Salaries Review will take place in Spring 2027. Any pay increases which are agreed will take effect from 1 August 2027.

Detailed information about the Professorial Salaries Review 2027 will be sent to non-clinical professors in Spring 2027.

Academics who wish to be considered for a salary review should discuss this with their Senior Academic Lead and/or Head of Department in the first instance.

Following that, a self evaluation should be carried about against the professorial pay criteria.

Documentation will be uploaded to the site in Spring 2027.

Details of the timeline will be uploaded in Spring 2027.
