What is Pathways to Marketing?

Pathways to Marketing aims to provide the opportunity for students to explore the varied range of career paths within the marketing sector. Students from across all disciplines will find they have the skills and attributes that are required for a successful career in marketing, ranging from the economic, technical, creative and customer-facing aspects of the sector. We are subjected to marketing in everyday life, and all businesses and sectors incorporate some elements of marketing making this Pathway an ideal entry to numerous career options.

Based on the growing number of students interested in pursuing a career in marketing, the University of Exeter has teamed up with local employers to deliver a technical training course over the course of 4 days. This will then be followed by a paid week long internship with a company in the industry. This pathway welcomes applicants from all disciplines and levels.

The interactive programme comprises 3 key elements:

  • Training – a 4 day programme, consisting of intensive training from sector experts and employability training, Monday 17 – Thursday 20 June 2019.

  • Integrated Marketing Communications
  • Digital Marketing and Social Media
  • Internship- You will undertake a week-long paid internship with an organisation in the sector; Monday 24 – Friday 28 June 2019
  • Project – Working within small groups, you will apply your training to a real-life business project during the training week.

It all adds up! This Careers activity counts towards the Exeter Award.

You must be a current University of Exeter student when you apply for the programme. We welcome applications from all disciplines and levels of study, as long as you can demonstrate a keen interest in this subject area.

You must have the right to work in the UK and provide your visa status and explanation on your application form. If you are called to the selection assessment session you will be asked to bring evidence of your right to work status.

It is important to note that information you provide on your application form will be shared with the internship employers as part of the internship matching process,

The application process is highly competitive and therefore only the best performing students will be selected for an assessment session and subsequently for inclusion on the programme. To ensure you submit your best application we recommend that you book on and complete an “Effective Application Form” workshop, bookable via My Career Zone before you complete your application. This workshop will also count to your Exeter Award.

Every application form will be reviewed once the programme advert closes on 4th March 2018. After application forms have been reviewed students will be shortlisted and then invited to an assessment session on Streatham campus where the final 20 students will be chosen. You will be notified if you have been called to an assessment centre or not by 8th March 2018. 

The assessment centre will take place during the week commencing 19th March 2018. These will be the only sessions delivered so in order for you to be successfully chosen for the programme you will need to be able to commit to attending.

Any students not successful in the application process will receive feedback for their performance, and will be signposted to resources and support available.

Training will take place the week after the end of the summer 2018 term; Monday 18th – Thursday 21st June 2018.

The 20 successfully selected students will undertake a week of intensive training, jointly delivered by sector experts and University of Exeter Employability Staff. This will comprise a mix of presentations, hands-on activities and social events.

Training will take place over 4 full days on the University of Exeter Streatham Campus.

If selected, you will need to undertake a week long internship with an organisation in the marketing sector. These internships will take place after your training has been completed from Monday 25th June – Friday 29th June 2018.

This week long (35 hour) internship will be paid and is fully funded by the University of Exeter.

If selected you will be required to identify which projects and businesses you are most interested in and send us your ranked choices by 3rd June. You will also be invited to a briefing session on the 6th June 2018.

A matching process will then be completed based on the understanding of the client’s business and your application form and identified preferences. No guarantee can be made that you will be matched to your preferred project but our aim is to match as many students to their preferred projects as possible.
